BLUE CARBON THE ECONOMICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT

BLUE  CARBON

Name:  TejaswiniThakre

What  is Blue Carbon?

Blue carbon is the carbon captured by ocean and coastal ecosystems. Mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows store this carbon as biomass or in sediments.

Why it is is Important?

Blue carbon is the carbon captured by ocean and coastal ecosystems. Mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows store this carbon as biomass or in sediments.

Human activity emit (or give off) something called carbon dioxide (co2) which contain atmospheric carbon & these gas are changing the world climate.
Blue carbon is the removal of the carbon by the worlds ocean and coastal ecosystem.
The sea grasses, mangroves and salt marshes along coast capture and hold carbon acting as carbon sink. This coastal system are small in size. Ocean vegetated habitat covers less than 0.5% of seabed they are responsible for more than 50% and potentially up to 70% of all carbon storage in ocean storage in ocean sediments.
Mangroves salt, marshes & sea grassescan store a comparable amount of carbon per year and high efficient carbon sink. Sea grasses, mangroves& salt marshes can capture CO2 from the atmosphere by sequestering. The carbon in their underlying sediments in underground and below ground biomass and in dead biomass.

Vegetated coastal ecosystem cover larger area and have less above ground biomass than terrestrial plant. They have the potential to impact longtermC sequestration particularly in sediments sink. One of the main concern with blue carbon is the rate of loss of these important marine ecosystem on the planet even compared to rain forest, current estimation managing climate coastal protection and health  coastal ecosystem are critical to maintain human wellbeing and global diversity.

Mangroves, tidal, salt marshes and seagrasses sequester and store significant amount of coastal blue carbon from the mitigating. Climate change, conservation and restoration of these coastal ecosystem has been increasingly addressed in international & national climate change mitigation policy and finance mechanism.

Benefits of Blue carbon:-
  •     Blue Carbon ecosystem provides job & income to local economics improve water quality support healthy fishers and provide coastal protection.
  • Mangroves acts as natural barrier & they reduce wave energy to reduce flood risk to costal community from strom surge and sea level size
  •  Seagrasses meadows trap suspended sediments in their roots which increase  light attenuation, improve water quality and reduce erosion coastal wetland absorb pollutants ( e.g. heavy metal, nutrients, suspended matter) thus helping to maintain water quantity and prevent eutrophication.
  •     These ecosystem provides important nursery habitat and breeding grounds to support fishers and variety of recreational opportunities( e.g. snorkeling, fishing, boating and ecotourism).
